When Jose Fernandez passed away unexpectedly, the Marlins and all of MLB were stunned. Ahead of their next game, Miami did all they could to honor their pitcher throughout the night, but Dee Gordon’s leadoff at-bat was the most memorable.
Facing Bartolo Colon and the Mets on September 26th, 2016, the Marlins weren’t worried about the playoffs that were technically still in contention for. For the last 36 hours, they had been working through their grief, and finally had the opportunity to show their love for Fernandez. Once the pre-game memorials were done, Dee Gordon had one last act in store. Welcome to a moment in history.
